Each Friday a homework packet comes home in the Friday Folder. The packet typically has a math review and spelling words for the week. The spelling words are not always practiced in class. Sometimes we do morning work to review the words and the words are posted in the classroom for the week. These are high frequency words, second grade blends, digraphs, dipthongs, and integrated words for the month. For MANY students these words MUST be studied in order to ge them correct. Spelling tests are on Thursdays and will returned for parents to view on Friday!
Some ideas for spelling practice:
- Write the words with colored pencils, pens, crayons
- Sing the words
- "Air" write the words
- Use the practice sheet for a test
- Write them many times
- Use the computer to type them
- Make silly sentences using the words
A parent asked if I could post the words on my SWIFT site each week. My goal AFTER conferences is to scan the pages into the computer and post the sheets online in the documents section of the SWIFT site. Please look for those to be available mid October on the site.
Homework in general? NO ONE likes homework. In second grade it is an expectation to read at least 10 minutes each night. This includes reading to your child, them reading to you, reading to a sibling. Comic books, newspapers, magazines, chapter books, picture books, cereal boxes, you name it--all counts as reading.
The worksheets are due on Friday and I check off the participation. This grade is reflected on the report as an "effort" grade in our Outcomes and Indicators as participation. I am please thus far with the efforts of our students to turn homework in!
Spelling test TOMORROW!
