Observations on Writing

This year has already provided so much growth for the students. I see the writing is better. The reading is off the charts, and the ability to KNOW that he or she is responsible for LEARNING is becoming apparent.

I enjoy reading the students' interactive journals. Not only for the amount of affection they share of me, of each other, of their families and activities---but also for the amount of growth I see in them as people.

They are little people who talk about inventions, dreams, goals, what they want to be when they grow up and so much more. It is a peek into the world of a 7 year old and they love to hear my voice back in the form of a response. I also see so much of the writing techniques we use in class..ellipses, exclamations, word choice! It is wonderful to see the transfer and the heartfelt words that are shared with me.

During conferences, many of you asked about HOW to get your kiddo to write at home. One answer I have. Get a spiral notebook and create a journal to write back and forth to each other. We discuss often a private journal and one we share with the thought of someone else reading it.

So this holiday season with some time off and we each strive to keep our brain working--invest in a shared journal. OR encourage your child to have one on their own...

Happy Writing
