Routine

I am always amazed at what summer does to little people. They seem to grow by leaps and bounds. Their appetites for learning are insatiable. The excitement to tell a story, to share a lost tooth, and to sneak in a teacher hug when ever possible.

I think about how the little bodies are in this "system" and the ability to manage friends, dance, sports, girl scouts school, home life, and LUNCHTIME can be so overwhelming at times. I think about starting a new job-new routines, new boss, new peers. I am an adult and the assault on my senses was always that I felt crazy with just knowing where my desk was, how I was to interact and what exactly was my role in my position.

Imagine being 7 and having those same questions.

I see how independent the new students to our classroom community are. I am thrilled that the interaction has been as though they were always part of our classroom. That warms my heart completely.

Today was very much as though we have been in school for months. Math lesson. CHECK. Writing lesson. CHECK. Reading lesson. CHECK. Pe, lunch, journal writing, read aloud. Check. Check. Check. Check and check. We are in full swing and 2nd grade expectations grow each day. I joked to them that now--for REAL--I was a teacher and no more funny business! Periods and Capitals MUST HAPPEN! Haha. The power of punctuation!

I look forward to the next few weeks as we establish a new routine and continue to build and enhance the old ones. One routine I need to practice? Knowing when lunch is. Sometimes that routine is just part of the day and I learned this today as I tried to send kids to eat at first grade lunch time!

Aww---but tomorrow is another day!
